My name is Bishop Lewis.
I’m a native Oxonian, and I have a degree from the University of MS. I’m a family man who loves his wife and daughter. I’m a retired, career police officer with 25 years of experience. I’ve practiced martial arts for 36 years, and I’ve taught martial arts for 23 years now. I love gardening, woodworking, and I’m growing out my “freedom beard” since I don’t have to shave ever again if I don’t want to!
I started learning Shotokan Karate in 1988 when I was 13 years old. I practiced Shotokan until I met my first kung fu teacher during the summer after graduating high school. He was so skilled that I immediately joined his school. That style of kung fu was called Ngor Chor (Wuzu Quan), and I practiced that until my teacher graduated from Ole Miss Law School. During all of this, I met and became best friends with my Wing Chun teacher, and we all trained together in Muay Thai, Kali, Tai Chi, boxing, and several other arts. After my Ngor Chor teacher graduated law school, I decided to pursue Wing Chun full-time, and I started teaching Wing Chun in 2001.
I became a police officer in 1999, and I worked at both the Oxford Police Department and the University of Mississippi Police Department, from which I retired after 25 years. I was a defensive tactics instructor for almost 20 years, teaching other police officers how to protect themselves in physical confrontations.
Over the years I have slowly blended my Wing Chun with my Muay Thai, Kali, Tai Chi, police tactics, and everything else that worked for me as a police officer and martial artist. Now that’s what I teach my students so that they can protect themselves and their families.
